Kier has completed the construction of a new surgical centre at NHS Golden Jubilee in Clydebank (see photo), increasing the hospital’s patient capacity and enabling the treatment of thousands of people waiting to access important care and procedures.
Scottish First Minister, John Swinney, visited the project to mark the milestone in the hospital’s expansion and open the centre. Kier, which has built the surgical centre on behalf of NHS Golden Jubilee, says it worked closely with the hospital and the Scottish Government ‘to deliver a range of first-class facilities that will help the hospital meet the growing demand for key elective specialties’.
Kier said: “The centre was developed with input from patients and staff, and enhances the hospital’s capacity for general and orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic procedures, and endoscopy. It will also increase staff training opportunities.
The new facilities include five orthopaedic theatres, a central sterilising and processing department, and five endoscopy procedure rooms – two of which are equipped with specialist training equipment for the NHS Scotland Academy, and an endoscopy decontamination unit.
Modern Methods of Construction were used to deliver the project efficiently, and the concrete frame and brick-clad façade were manufactured off site, reducing construction time.

The project was procured through Frameworks Scotland 2, and is the second phase of the Golden Jubilee’s expansion plans. During the first phase, Kier successfully delivered a new eye centre, which began treating patients in November 2020. It features six purpose-built twin theatres, and integrated outpatient and diagnostic facilities.
