Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust

Welcome to the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. We offer an extensive range of services, including cancer, pathology, surgery, and gynaecology to over 490,000 people in south west London and north east Surrey. We operate two busy general hospitals, Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, and run services from other locations, including Sutton Hospital. We are also part of two innovative intergrated care partnerships – Sutton Health and Care and Surrey Downs Health and Care.

St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).

With nearly 900,000 people coming to our hospitals for care and treatment every year, our almost 5,000 staff and 500 volunteers work around the clock to keep our busy hospitals running smoothly.

As teaching hospitals, we play a key role in the education and training of tomorrow’s doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Both sites work in partnership with St George’s Hospital and St George’s Medical School in south London to deliver high quality education and research. Outside St George’s Hospital, we support the education of more medical students than any other teaching hospital in south London.

Sutton Health and Care

Sutton Health and Care (opens in a new window) is a pioneering partnership made up of the GP federation in Sutton, the London Borough of Sutton, South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust and Epsom and St Helier hospitals. Working together, we provide community services in Sutton, caring for adults in their own homes across the borough, providing children’s community health services, and sexual health services.

On Monday 1 April 2019, adult and children’s community heath services transferred to Sutton Health and Care from The Royal Marsden, while sexual health services transferred from Chelsea and Westminster. Adult community services, specialist children’s services and sexual health services staff are employed by Epsom and St Helier hospitals as part of Sutton Health and Care. Health visiting and school nursing services and the associated safeguarding and admin services have been taken in-house by the London Borough of Sutton.

Surrey Downs Health and Care

Surrey Downs Health and Care (opens in a new window) is an innovative partnership between local NHS organisations to provide adult community health services in Surrey Downs (that’s the Epsom, Dorking and East Elmbridge areas) from 1 April 2019. Surrey Downs Health and Care is a partnership between:

• The three GP federations that operate in the Surrey Downs area
  • GP Health Partners in the Epsom, Leatherhead and Ewell area
  • Dorking Healthcare
  • Surrey Medical Network in the East Elmbridge area
• CSH Surrey
• Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust
• Surrey Council County (associate member).

Historically, there have been boundary lines between the organisations that provide care to people in their homes, in GP surgeries and in hospitals, but we have always been in united in our mission to provide great care to the people who need us. It’s on those grounds that the Surrey Downs Health and Care partnership was formed – we want local people to receive the care that they need in the right environment. Bringing together our expertise will allow us to improve patient care and enable local people to access the right support, care and treatment more easily than ever before.

At the centre of Surrey Downs Health and Care is six primary care networks (PCNs), bringing together GPs and community services staff to provide proactive care to patients in their homes and the local community. The PCNs will:

• Support people in their homes and those living in care homes
• Deploy the most appropriate team member(s) in a co-ordinated and timely way to patients
• Reduce risk of hospital admission for patients when it is not needed
• Work closely with community hospitals and specialist teams, as required.
