The Institute welcomes both public and private healthcare providers, as well as those employed in private sector engineering and consultancy firms and practices.
Many members come from a non-engineering background such as architecture, construction and facilities management.
There is a place in IHEEM for all those involved in the healthcare estates sector and a category of membership to match your experience and qualifications.
There is a £50 application fee, you will be sent an invoice for this upon making your application. Please note we are unable to process your application without the fee.
It is important to note that you do not apply for a particular membership grade, the membership and registration committee will award this based on the information you provide.

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP
FELLOW
Fellows of the Institute are typically Senior Professionals in the sector, whether an engineer or not and who warrant this highest designation. Those in membership at this grade are entitled to use the designatory letters FIHEEM.
REQUIREMENTS
To be elected as a Fellow you must meet the following requirements:
Hold a first degree, and/or be already registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer, and/or hold an equivalent membership with another relevant Professional Body and have at least 5 years’ relevant healthcare experience and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
OR
Have 10 years of healthcare experience in senior management and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
MEMBER
Members of the Institute are typically Managers, Senior Specialists and experienced Professionals within the sector, whether an engineer or not. Those in membership at this grade are entitled to use the designatory letters MIHEEM
REQUIREMENTS
To be elected as a Member you must meet the following requirements:
Hold a Degree, Foundation Degree, C&G Full Tech Certificate, HNC, HND, NVQ4 (or equivalent) and/or be already registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer, and/or hold an equivalent membership with another relevant Professional Body and have three years relevant experience, not necessarily in healthcare, and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
OR
Have 5 years’ experience in senior management and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
TECHNICIAN
Technician members of the Institute are typically technically qualified engineers working within the sector, who, in being awarded this grade will also be eligible for registration as an Engineering Technician and will be encouraged to do so. Those in membership at this grade are entitled to use the designatory letters TIHEEM.
REQUIREMENTS
To be elected as a Technician you must meet the following requirements:
Hold an HNC, NVQ3 (or equivalent) and/or be already registered with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician, and/or hold an equivalent membership with another relevant Professional Body and have 2 years relevant experience, not necessarily in healthcare, and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER
Associate Members of the Institute are typically those who maybe new to the sector, who may have little or no recognised qualifications or who may work in supporting occupations. Those in membership at this grade are entitled to use the designatory letters AMIHEEM.
REQUIREMENTS
To be elected as an Associate Member you must meet the following requirements:
Hold an ONC, NVQ3 (or equivalent) in a non-engineering subject and/or be already registered with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician, and/or hold an equivalent membership with another relevant Professional Body and have 2 years relevant experience, not necessarily in healthcare, and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
OR
Have 3 years relevant experience and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
CRAFTS PERSON
Crafts Person members of the Institute are typically Technical or Trades personnel working in the sector. They may have appropriate competencies built up through experience, but minimum level of qualification. They may be seeking to develop their careers via membership. Those in membership at this grade are entitled to use the designatory letters CPIHEEM.
REQUIREMENTS
To be elected as a Crafts Person you must meet the following requirements:
Hold an NVQ2 (or equivalent) and/or have served an indentured apprenticeship and/or hold an equivalent membership with another relevant Professional Body and have 1 years relevant experience, and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV.
OR
Have one year relevant healthcare experience and demonstrate appropriate competencies, which will be established from your job description and CV
GRADUATE
Graduate members of the Institute are Engineers and Technical Staff on an approved training course or IPD scheme Those in membership at this grade are entitled to use the designatory letters GIHEEM
REQUIREMENTS
To be elected as a Graduate you must meet the following requirements:
Whilst in full -time employment, be studying for an engineering or related qualification, or be a new graduate on an IPD scheme.
SKILLED PERSON
Skilled persons currently employed within a Healthcare Facilities organisation may apply to become Skilled Person Affiliate members and take advantage of the full range of educational and networking events available.
REQUIREMENTS
IHEEM invites applications for Skilled Person Affiliate Membership from all skilled persons currently employed within a Healthcare Facilities organisation.
This grade of membership does not grant the use of professional post-nominals, but members will be able to state that they are “A Skilled Person Affiliate Member of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management”
There is no application fee for Skilled Person membership.
