WHAT IS MENTORING?
Mentoring can be understood as a relationship between two individuals, the mentor, and the mentee, where support and guidance is offered to the mentee.
However, the scope and quality of a partnership can be infinitely variable, being determined by the specific mentor-mentee pairing, meaning that outcomes, too, can range from concise and focused, to broad-reaching and unexpected.
Integral to the success of all mentoring relationships is a mutual understanding and agreement as to the expectations of both parties. Developing trust is critical to creating an environment in which mentor and mentee can work effectively together. By encouraging clarity around what is needed, what can be offered, and what is, the likelihood of authenticity and long-term productiveness becomes greatly enhanced.
IHEEM mentors and mentees are paired on a case-by-case basis, relevant to the needs of the mentee, and the specialism of each mentor. This approach taken by the Institute ensures individual members are offered personalised, relevant, and effective support.
THE IHEEM MENTOR SCHEME
All mentors who operate under the Institute are required to attend dedicated training.
This acts as a mark of assurance to mentees that an IHEEM mentor will champion and practice the following values and behaviours:
-
- Impartiality and open-mindedness
-
- Confidentiality and respect of boundaries
-
- Positive engagement and active listening
MYIHEEM
In addition to IHEEM’s network of dedicated mentors, the MyIHEEM Mentor platform provides members with a confidential record keeping facility to document mentoring meetings and progress throughout each relationship.
MyIHEEM allows users to add a relationship to the record, and add as much information as desired, all of which will only be viewable by the mentor and mentee.
There is an additional capacity to pull through top line information of meetings to individuals’ linked CPD records, excluding all notes and confidential information. This allows users to track dates and hours dedicated to mentoring or being mentored, and include records within a CPD timeline, whilst retaining total confidentiality of meeting content.
BENEFITS OF MENTORING AND BEING MONITORED THROUGH IHEEM
In addition to the MyIHEEM recording platform, training as a mentor with IHEEM is a CPD certified standard. This development offered to IHEEM mentors is a formal recognition of the guidance and support already widely enacted across the industry.
Building structure around the existing and future engagement of IHEEM mentors is valuable to the Institute’s membership. Identifying and tracking mentor availability allows for facilitation of connections which may not otherwise be available or evident, and to better understand trends in development needs and skill sharing across our network.
